A student places a condom on a bingo card after the announcer says, “Leaving a condom in your wallet.” Condom bingo was one of the activities involved at Webster University’s first sex fair.
Residential Housing Association (RHA) held the fair in Sunnen Lounge on Sept. 27. It was called BEDucation. The goal was to create an open environment to talk about issues students face concerning sex said Lisa Adden.
“We just thought Webster has so many diverse people and that this is a topic that’s usually not brought to the table,” said Adden, treasurer for RHA. “We wanted to bring different issues that come up during sex.”
Dr. Patrick Stack, director of counseling and life development at Webster, presented on the dangers of going into the pornography business before the fair began. Stack’s presentation was called “What’s wrong with porn.” He talked about how people can get caught up in the industry without knowing it. It also included topics about intimacy in relationships and how it relates to sex.
“So many people try to find intimacy in a sexual relationship, and they end up with a broken heart,” Stack said. “Because what I said in the presentation is you cannot be intimate in a sexual relationship if you are not intimate outside the bedroom.”

Plans for BEDucation began in August, but the idea came from a RHA conference Adden attended earlier in the year.
“We went to a conference called Macurh. It’s a national housing association, and someone talked about how they did this sex fair and it really opened up the conversation. It made it a topic people were more comfortable discussing and that they could ask questions,” Adden said.
Nearly 100 people showed up for the first BEDucation, and Adden hopes this fair can become a series of events at Webster.
“We are trying to create that open environment where you can have these conversations,” said Adden.
