The Mayor of Webster Groves, Gerry Welch, witnessed the record breaking experience. The Executive Assistant to the General Director at Opera Theater of St. Louis Hannah Ingram and Minnick Surveying land surveyor were also present.
The Process
The Program Manager for Campus Activities Lauren Douglass led the event. Douglass had to do research leading up to the big day.
“They [Guinness Book of World Records] sent us a whole bunch of requirements that we need to submit in order for it to be official. That includes video footage, photographs, two separate witness statements, one from a certified surveyor. We did all that, and will be compiling all those things here in the next couple of weeks, and then send that in to them before the end of the school year.” said Douglass.
16 large tubes of ice cream were placed on a tables that stretch as long as the quad. The sun was blazing down during the peak of the day. Students feared that the ice cream would melt before they could even make the dessert.
A count down was given for the students to get started. In the form of an assembly line, students stood along side the table wearing gloves. They used plastic scoopers, and their hands when the scoopers broke, to make the dessert.
In order for the dessert to be complete, all ice cream and toppings had to be used. Everything on the dessert tray had to touch. Once everything was complete, students and staff gathered together to eat the great dessert.
Volunteers were shocked to believe that the task wasn’t as hard as they thought it would be.
The event also included large bouncy inflatables, to entertain all the volunteers and witnesses. Douglass said the event had to surround the theme for iFest concert guest “Reel Big Fish” which is why a ‘real big’ dessert was made.
