Out of all the sci-fi movies I have watched, “The Creator” not only grabbed my attention but also made me very emotional. Gareth Edwards has directed a masterpiece with this film, creating an intense sci-fi experience with the perfect mixture of science and machinery with a theme of love conquering all.
The film does an amazing job of exploring the ethical and philosophical questions that surround the scientific experimentation of creating AI robots.
The movie takes place in a future where humans can be replaced with humanoid AI. The main character, Joshua (John David Washington), lives happily with his wife Maya (Gemma Chan) until they’re raided by the anti-AI American military. Maya is taken on their ships, but while sailing away, an explosion goes off, killing half of the AI robots including Maya. Joshua is heartbroken but still believes that Maya is still alive, so he spends the next 5 years searching for her.
The plot revolves around an AI boy named Alphie, whose very creation pushes the boundaries of science. We follow Joshua as he becomes a reluctant father figure to Alphie. Along the way, he gets to witness a different side of AI.
Joshua’s friend, Drew (Sturgill Simpson), and his AI girlfriend Kami (Ngo Thanh Van) briefly partner up with Joshua and Alphie. The glimpse we get to see of Kami and Drew’s relationship shows Joshua that not only can robots and humans coexist in peace, but can also fall in love.
The movie is truly a visual feast. While the overall tones are very dark and moody, there are also displays of vibrant colors that create a backdrop that is surreal and an atmosphere that reflects the emotional turmoil that each of these characters represents. The lighting and camera work enhances the dynamic of power and vulnerability of the story.
“The Creator” has truly redefined the standards of sci-fi movies with intensity and emotion. It challenges its audience to really consider the consequences of scientific ambition.
