Women’s Soccer
Not to be outdone by the men’s side, the women’s team has opened their account in conference play with a bang. On Oct .10, the women’s team beat Eureka College 11-0, an identical score to the men’s team. Kayla Dye and Vanessa Carlos scored hat tricks for the Gorloks.
Head Women’s Coach Luigi Scire said that earlier games against nationally-ranked opponents (Washington University and Augustana College) prepared them for where they are now.
“I think we’re taking positive steps forward even though we’ve been inundated with injuries,” Scire said.
Scire said five regular starters missed the game against Eureka.
The women’s team is 5-4-3 on the season and 2-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).

Golf
The golf team has finished their fall season with a second-place finish at the Big Blue Invitational in Decatur, Il. on Oct. 3-4. Junior Tyler Thorman shot an even par in the second round of the tournament, shooting the lowest score on the team.
The course was covered with sitting water after about eight inches of rain, which is something that Coach Andrew Belskey said the team has dealt with this year.
“There were times that our guy would let the conditions get to them, and they might have just quit in the middle of the round and not kept grinding through the rounds. But this team has definitely learned to continue to fight through the struggles that sometimes come with playing in those conditions, and they’re getting a lot better for it,” Belskey said.
Belskey said the team had its best fall season ever.

Cross Country
Valerie Martin has continued her record-breaking year for the track team with a 34 placed finish (out of 404) at the Louisville Classic in Kentucky. Martin ran the third-fastest race ever by a Gorlok at this distance (top two times belong to Heather Heisse, a 2014 graduate). Martin was clocked at 19 minutes and 37 seconds, a personal record. Her time is the fastest in school history by an underclassman in a 5k race according to Webster Athletics.
Also, freshman Holly Goergen broke the freshman school record in a 5k race with a time of 20:33.
For the men’s side Jason Hickson again led the way with a 25th placed finish out of 350 runners at the Louisville Classic.

Volleyball
The volleyball team has won four of their last five games. On their “Dig Pink” night on Oct. 1 the Gorloks managed a victory over Fontbonne University, but lost to Washington University.
On Oct. 4 the team notched two victories on senior night. It was a special night for a team with nine seniors, the most Head Volleyball Coach Merry Graf has ever coached. Still, the team remains focused on the conference schedule.
“We’ve got two losses at this point in the conference (against Westminster and Greenville) and we’ll get an opportunity to see those two teams again. Obviously we’re looking to avenge those and turn those next two games into Ws,” Graf said.
The Gorloks are now 7-2 in the SLIAC and are currently third in the conference.
