The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced on Wednesday its decision to postpone the women’s basketball tournament on Saturday Feb. 23.
Forecasters call for a snow and ice storm to hit Westminster College in Fulton on Thursday, Feb. 21, the day the first round of the tournament was originally scheduled to begin. Commissioner of the SLIAC, Will Wolper said multiple coaches and athletic directors in the conference made him aware on Tuesday Feb., 19 they may have trouble getting to Fulton for the games.
As the No. 2 seed, Webster University faces No. 3 Eureka College (Ill.) on Saturday at 1 p.m. No. 1 seed and host school Westminster will play the No. 4 seed Spalding University (Ky.), at 4 p.m. to follow the Webster-Eureka matchup.
The championship game, that was scheduled for Saturday, is now also pushed back and will be played on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m.
Wolper said the SLIAC men’s basketball tournament being played at Spalding will not be affected by the weather. Louisville is to have high temperature in the 40s and 50s over the next few days.
The first round for the men’s teams will begin on Friday, Feb. 22 with No. 2 seeded Westminster facing No. 3 Eureka at 5 p.m. followed by No. 1 Spalding against No. 4 Webster at 8 p.m.
