The Webster University women’s soccer team defeated Illinois College 2-0 on Saturday, Sept. 29 at St. Louis Soccer Park. The win gave the Gorloks a bounce-back game as they were shut out in their last game to nationally-ranked WashU on Sept. 27.
Both teams had opportunities early as each team had a hand ball call outside their boxes. Illinois College missed its free kick.
Junior midfielder Ally Nikolaus scored her fifth goal of the season to put the Gorloks on top 1-0. Freshman midfielder Jenna Hopkins had the assist.
A nasty headball collision occurred in the first half between freshman forward Lauren Pratt and Illinois College freshman defender Julie Weier. Both players had to leave the game due to blood on their foreheads. Pratt never returned to the game. There was a ten minute delay to clear the blood off the field.
The game could have gone either way in the second half. Each team had chances to score, but Webster finally put another one away as freshman defender Briana Small scored her second goal of the season with four minutes left to secure the 2-0 victory over the Lady Blues.
The Gorloks are 7-3 on the year and will open up St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 3 against Blackburn College at 5 p.m. at Soccer Park.
