Webster’s men’s basketball team kept Principia winless on the season with a 96-86 victory Saturday, Jan. 14, at Grant Gymnasium. In the process, the Gorloks ran their record to 6-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. First-place Webster will take on Greenville, 3-2 in conference, Wednesday night in Greenville, Ill.
Sophomore guard Hollis Edwards sparked a Webster run in the first half that broke open a close game. The Gorloks led by three, 28-25, when Edwards hit a 3-pointer and followed seconds later with a steal at mid court and a layup. When Jarrod Huskey scored down low on the next possession, Webster’s lead was up to 10 at 35-25 with just under seven minutes left in the first half. By halftime, Webster had pushed its lead to 17 points, 54-37.
Junior point guard Dietrick Sooter scored all of his game-high 18 points in the first half. In fact, Sooter scored the Gorlok’s first nine points on three 3-point field goals. Edwards added 17 to a balanced Webster offense, which topped 90 points for the second time in three games and won for the fourth time in a row. The Gorloks improved to 6-8 overall. Principia, meanwhile, lost its 13th straight game. Principia dropped to 0-6 in SLIAC play.
