Sam Powers thought of the perfect way to describe her role for the Webster University Softball team this year. She is the grandma.
Powers and Kelly Bridgmon are the only seniors on the roster, but Powers is the only player in her fourth year at Webster.
“I brought it (the nickname) up as a joke and it kinda stuck,” Powers said.
On March, 30 Powers pitched 3.1 innings in Webster’s 8-0 loss to Fontbonne University in the first game of a double header. Webster lost in the second game again by a score of 8-0. Both ended after 5 innings.
She has started in all of Webster’s 14 games this year and has played four different positions: pitcher, right field, first base and second base. She leads the team in innings pitched, and is second in RBI.
Powers did not welcome the opportunity to pitch this season. This is the second year in a row she did not want to pitch, but was forced to due to an injury-prone pitching staff.
“It’s definitely been different,” Powers said. “I’m just going out there and trying to do what I need to do to keep us in games.”
The Gorloks are 6-8 this season and will play next at Blackburn College on April 4.
