Five minutes into Lady Gorlok home-opener at Soccer Park, junior goalkeeper Jessica Davis had a scare against Central College (Iowa) on Sept 7. Davis was sideswiped by Dutch forward Alayna Bailey and crashed on her back after a Dutch defender fired a shot on goal from midfield. Davis lied on the ground for two minutes before getting up and register her second shutout of the season in a 3-0 Gorlok victory.

Davis said the wind was just knocked out of her and she would be ready for the next day’s 2 p.m. matchup against DePauw University (Ind.). She didn’t dress for that game.

“She’s a warrior back there,” said Associate Head Coach Mike Hutchison. “As a goalie you have to go for the ball. You are vulnerable a lot. You have to be able to play with pain, and put that aside.”

The Gorloks and Dutch remained scoreless after one half of play. Five minutes into the second half, junior defender Whitney Scott lobbed a pass over two Dutch defenders to a wide-open midfielder, Ally Nikolaus. Nikolaus riffled a shot over Dutch goalkeeper Sydney Lunardi’s head from a near impossible angle near the end line for her first goal of the season.

Ten minutes later, sophomore forward Ashley Mess gave the Gorloks a two goal cushion after Lauren Pratt chipped a pass to Mess to create a breakaway with two Gorloks against the Dutch keeper. Mess tallied her second goal of the season.

With five minutes remaining in the match, junior forward Lauren Scalise for the second straight game diminished any chance of a Dutch comeback with her team leading third goal of the season.
