The Webster University baseball team is returning to the Championship of the NCAA Regional Tournament. The Gorloks defeated the only undefeated team left in the tournament, Concordia College Chicago, 8-3.
Next for Webster will be a rematch of either Condordia or Augustana College (Ill.) who the Gorloks lost to 5-3 on May 16. In that game Webster seemed to have beaten itself, with 10 errors on the day.
Concordia was beginning to write an underdog story as they had already upset Augustana in the first round, the No. 18 ranked team in the country. They also advanced past Adrian College (Mich.) in a 3-2 victory.
Against Webster, it looked like it would be a close battle from the start. Webster lead by one after three innings, Senior Mike Rainbolt lead the offense early by scoring twice and driving in a run. After that, he Gorloks never took a step back.
Junior Dylan Dean Smith and Senior Ryan Martinez combined to shut out the Cougars in the final 6 innings. Martinez earned the win and is 3-0 on the season.
All Webster batters combined for a .424 batting average, with senior Cody Stevenson leading the way with three hits. He came around to score each time he reached base and Senior Taylor Stoulp, batting in the third spot, was the man to drive him in two of those three times.
The Championship game will be played at 3:30 P.M on May 18 and Webster will face the winner of Augustana vs. Concordia. All three teams have already lost a game, so there will be only one game needed to decided the Central Region Champion.
