Women’s tennis clinches SLIAC title, men’s team earns 3rd in conference

For the second time in three years, the Webster University women’s tennis team wins the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship.

The women’s team began the tournament on April 20 at Principia College. The Gorloks faced Greenville College and won 7-0 to give them a spot in the conference championship.

Fresh off the win, the women’s team took on Principa College at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park on April 21. Webster beat the Principia Panthers 5-1. The women’s team put its record at 19-2 for the 2011-2012 campaign and was undefeated at home this season. The women’s opponent and seeding for the NCAA Division III tournament has yet to be announced. The first round beings May 11.

The men’s team defeated Eureka College 5-0 in the first round at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center on April 20. The Gorloks then traveled to Sunset Tennis Center where they matched with Westminster College. The Blue Jays upended the Gorloks 5-0 to end Webster’s hopes of a conference championship.

Webster defeated Greenville 7-2 on April 21 to secure third place in the SLIAC Conference Championship. The Gorloks swept doubles play and won at positions 1 through 4 in singles play. Webster’s 14-4 record is a new season high for wins for the men’s tennis program. The third-place finish ends the 2011-2012 season for the men’s squad.
