The Webster University women’s soccer team fell to the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders 2-1 on Sept. 4 at Soccer Park. The loss evened the Gorloks’ record at 1-1, as Webster had defeated Nebraska Wesleyan 4-1 on Sept. 3.
Coach Luigi Scire was disappointed with the loss, but sees it as a learning experience.
“I think what we grab from it is that, with the good, there are going to be some times when it’s not going our way,” Scire said. “It being a young team, they will learn and grow from this.”
Webster controlled the first half of the game against the Raiders, out-shooting MSOE 9-1. The Gorloks had several scoring opportunities but failed to find the back of the net.
Webster was awarded a penalty kick when freshman forward Kristin Montgomery was taken down in the box by a sliding MSOE goalie. Sophomore midfielder Katie Aubuchon took the penalty kick, but it hit the post, ricocheted off the goalie and went out of bounds.
“Those things happen, but you’ve got to be able to play through that and find a way to get that goal,” Scire said.
It was scoreless at halftime, but MSOE scored two minutes into the second half to take the lead 1-0. MSOE scored again with 29 minutes left in the game to give them a two-goal advantage.
Montgomery scored her first collegiate goal off a corner kick from senior midfielder Jordan Geller with five minutes remaining in the game. It would prove to be too little too late for the Gorloks, as they lost 2-1.
“Any competitor will tell you they want to win every game,” Scire said. “I think everybody involved in this program was very disappointed in the result.”
Scire believes the loss will be a learning experience for the team, but said with playing time, success will come.
“I think we need more time to play as a unit,” Scire said. “The more time we have to play, the more time we have to gel. The more we gel, the more success we will have. In the long run it will be a very successful season for us.”
In the win over Nebraska Wesleyan, senior midfielder Morgan Milfeld led the team with two goals, while senior midfielder Amanda Zeier and freshman forward Kortney Luaders also scored. Luaders’ goal was the first of her collegiate career.
Webster plays at 6 p.m. on Sept. 7 at Fontbonne University before traveling to play at Monmouth College on Sept. 11.
