The Kooyumjian Gallery hosted a reception Sept. 13 showcasing the work of Webster University alum Gaby Deimeke, a portrait and music photographer. She has captured many artists ranging from J Balvin, Ed Sheeran, 30 seconds to Mars and many more.

Deimeke graduated from Webster University in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in Photography and Studio Art, but has had a passion for photography since childhood.

“My parents gave me a little point-and-shoot camera when I was 12 years old and I became obsessed,” Deimeke said. “I literally carried it with me everywhere, I took pictures of literally everything. I took pictures of all my friends, I would take it to volleyball games that I had and I just never stopped shooting and I still haven’t stopped.”

In October of 2021, Deimeke got her big break at the Outside Lands music festival where J Balvin was headlining the event. The Colombian artist saw Deimeke’s photos and asked his manager to contact her. She was hired by his team to photograph his concert in Puerto Rico, resulting in being his official photographer for three years.

“I’ve been working with the J Balvin camp for the past three years, which has been an absolute joy,” Deimeke wrote in the biography posted in the gallery. “When you work with the same artist over time, you learn what angles they like and what types of images they prefer, and you gain access to intimate moments in their life, allowing the capture of candid and special moments.”

Deimeke has made her mark worldwide with the J Balvin team. Together, they have traveled to five continents and various cities including Paris, Quebec, Indonesia and Australia. While she is still working with J Balvin, she has begun taking on additional projects.

“My life is just kind of chaotic. I’m traveling around, I’m shooting different music festivals, I’m doing some shows for J Balvin, and also exploring video a little bit. I’ve been diving into shooting more music videos and stuff like that,” Deimeke said. “So it’s a different place all the time but I really like that and I really like the change of pace and being busy and traveling, so I love it!”
