Webster University’s women’s soccer team ranks number one in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Women’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll. The Gorloks then began the season by winning its first three games.
This marks the fifth straight season the Gorloks have entered the season atop the preseason polls. Last season, the Gorloks went 13-8 and were undefeated in conference play. They advanced to the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament, but lost in the first round.
Head coach Luigi Scire said he will miss last year’s seniors, but was excited about the incoming freshmen class. He said the goal for the season was to advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the thirteenth time in school history.
“Webster enters the season with a balanced group of experienced returnees and talented newcomers,” Scire said. “Eight student athlete recruits will join a determined and disciplined squad. Hoping to recreate the successes they’ve had in recent years as they meet the challenges of the 2017 campaign.”
21 players return from last year’s squad. Sophomore forward Janel Bond was second on the team with 22 points and is the leading returning scorer.
Midfielder Carolyn Ries said the team worked hard during spring and summer practices and workouts. She also said the team is striving to make it farther than last season.
“We’re always focused during practices and games,” Ries said. “Each person brings a different component to the team, which makes us even stronger.”
