Webster University women’s tennis continued its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference winning streak with a 5-4 victory over Principia College April 11.

The win was the closest match the Gorloks have had this conference season. Their previous matches were a 9-0 victory over Fontbonne University and a 9-0 victory over Blackburn College.

“We have some pretty good competition,” said team captain Monica Behrle. “We beat our rivals Principia last night. That’s always a good indicator how we’re going to do the rest of the season.”

After winning two of the three doubles matches, three set wins by senior Kaylen Kress and freshman Sara Rice sealed the late victory.

Principia switched their lineup from last season. Behrle faced off against freshman Paige Cooley on line one and lost in two sets 6-1, 6-2.

“They have a pretty solid lineup all the way down to line six,” Behrle said. “They definitely improved since last year, but we were able to stick through it.”

Freshman Madison Watts said she was playing through a wrist injury in her loss to Principia senior Justine Roy, but is optimistic about her chances if they play again in the conference tournament.

The Gorloks are 11-8 overall on the season and 3-0 in conference play. The team has two more conference games this season before the conference tournament; one against Westminster College April 20, the other against Greenville College April 23.
