The day after President Barack Obama’s State of the Union Address in February, his administration released the College Scorecard — a poorly executed and unoriginal database.
The scorecard allows students to search colleges, and mainly provides information on tuition cost, median federal loans borrowed, enrollment size, graduation rate and average loan default. The U.S. Department of Education’s College Affordability and Transparency Center designed the scorecard. The scorecard does not offer a way for students to compare colleges side-by-side. The Journal would like to see that option added as the scorecard is improved.
The Journal applauds the president for letting colleges know he is watching during his State of the Union Address. However, we wish the scorecard’s data showed this to be true. When it comes to higher education, we expect the president to act as journalists do — as watchdogs. This scorecard does not meet that expectation.
