Despite double-digit performances from two seniors, the Webster University women’s basketball team fell 71-55 to the Westminster College (Mo.) Blue Jays on Sunday, Feb. 24 in Fulton. The loss eliminates the Gorloks from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship tournament in the final round and ends their 2012-2013 campaign.
Senior guards Gwen Williams and Maggie Zehner netted 14 and 11 points, respectively, in their curtain call as Gorloks. Senior guard Airyn Miller came off the bench to score 8 points in the defeat. Zehner and sophomore guard/forward Courtney Pursley both came away with 7 rebounds to lead Webster in that category.
After trailing 29-23 at halftime, the Gorloks came within one point to open the second half. However, Westminster stretched the lead to 12 points with less than four minutes remaining in regulation.
Webster was attempting to make its second NCAA Division-III tournament appearance in three years under coach Jordan Olufson. The loss ends the collegiate career of three seniors — Zehner, Williams and Miller.
