Track and field teams break Webster indoor records at IWU
The Webster men’s and women’s track and field teams kept changing the record books at the Titan Open hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill., on Saturday, Jan. 26.
On the women’s side, junior Sarah Hays registered 4.4 meters in the long jump, which was the second best in women’s track and field history for Webster. Hays was 10th out of 13 participants in the event. Junior Julie Greenough broke the Webster record for the women’s 800 meter run with a time of 2:39:22 and placed 12th overall among 24 runners. Freshman Jessica Tautphaeus and sophomore Mackenzie Wilder also participated in the event.
For the men’s team, senior Daniel Henkey set a new personal best in the mile run with a mark of 4:37:53. Henkey earned ninth place overall out of 45 runners in the men’s mile run. In the 200 meter dash, sophomore Zachary Zurfluh-Cunningham set a new Webster record with a time of 23.83 seconds. Zurfluh-Cunninghman placed 16th out of 46 participants in the event.
Coach Kelly Parsley and the track and field squads will head to Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill., on Saturday, Feb. 2 to compete in the Jim Green Invitational at 10 a.m. (To see the total results at the Titan Open, click the link: http://www.iwusports.com/custompages/MTrack/MTRK2013/12613IndoorResults.pdf)
Baseball ranked 10th in preseason poll
The baseball team was ranked 10th in a preseason poll by D3baseball.com. The 2013 poll has Wheaton College (Mass.) ranked first overall.
Webster faced Wheaton twice in 2012 but lost both meetings. Other teams Webster faced in 2012 who made the top 10 include Marietta College (Ohio) — the 2012 College World Series champion — who was placed third in the poll, Birmingham-Southern College (Ala.) (sixth) and Kean University (N.J.) (seventh).
Webster finished seventh in the final polls for 2012. The Gorloks will face four teams in D3baseball.com’s preseason top 25 poll in 2013.
