Weeks after clinching the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, the Webster University women’s tennis team saw its school-record season come to a close on May 10. The Gorloks dropped the Round 1 match to the Wheaton College Thunder 5-0. The match took place at the DePauw Tennis Center in Greencastle, Ind.

Seniors Paige Tungate and Allison Tungate were defeated 8-1 at No. 1 doubles. Junior Lindsey Hays and freshman Lauren Hacker were taken down by the same score at No. 2. The freshman duo of Kathleen Kennedy and Marissa Lewis dropped an 8-3 decision at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Paige Tungate lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1. The Thunder clinched the victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Webster freshman Mackenzie Wilder at the No. 6 position.

Despite the first-round defeat, Webster’s women’s team set a school program record for wins in a season with a 19-3 overall mark. Seniors Allison and Paige Tungate will be ending their Webster athletic careers. Allison Tungate went 17-3 in doubles and 18-3 in singles for the 2011-2012 season. Paige Tungate compiled a 14-7 singles and 16-3 doubles record for this year.

The offseason recruiting process continues for coach Michael Siener. Siener will be returning seven players from this year’s squad after the departure of the Tungate twins.
