An elated Steward Stiles III stood in front of the stained glass windows in the Winnie Moore auditorium, beaming in his dark suit. It was a big night for Stiles, a junior music education major, who after seeing all previous gospel events fall through was finally able to show off the choir he created. Stiles acted as emcee, soloist and choir director at the “Evening of Praise” held Nov. 9.

A crowd of about 50 people, mostly community members, was in attendance for the Webster Gospel Choir’s debut performance. The concert was free and open to the public.

Spoken word poet X Blu Rayne kicked off the night and was followed by a variety of other St. Louis performers, including mime dancers and a gospel rapper. The gospel choir, made up of eight Webster students and Stiles, headlined the event by performing several songs throughout the night. Members of the Audio Engineering Society staged the microphones and ran sound for the concert.

The gospel choir practices two days a week in the Webster Village Apartment Clubhouse.
