The Webster University women’s basketball team is currently on a 23-0 run, with players more dedicated than ever. On top of securing their fifth straight SLIAC regular season title after a win against Blackburn College last week, one question still remains for their season. After facing multiple first round exits in the NCAA tournament, will they finally be able to overcome the hurdle this season?

“It motivated us as a team for sure, because we know that the first round of the NCAA tournament will be the hardest game for the first couple rounds because once you’re past the first round the second tends to be easier,” senior Jordyn Grimes.

With four seniors on the team, the future is unclear despite this winning streak, for the NCAA first round and the future of the Women’s Basketball team as a whole.

“My big goal is to go to the NCAA and win that thing. It doesn’t start til we get to that tournament because respectfully to respect all teams,” senior Bethany Lancaster said. “You know, this is like our third or fourth year winning the conference but it’s like I want that like this has been done repeatedly. It’s nothing different, nothing new. You know I want that trophy. I want that national recognition. You know we work hard for it.”

Like the seniors, the juniors are just as motivated to get things done on the NCAA stage, as they might have big shoes to fill going into the coming seasons if this season is a success. Leaving the 2024-25 seasons up to the new group of juniors.

This year we want to make it farther than we ever have, show people we’re really that team,” junior Nysa Gilchrist said.

The players, however, are not the only ones incredibly motivated this year. We can also see this through the coaching staff.

“I feel our players and coaches are highly motivated people who are very competitive and want to be successful in life in many different areas,” head coach Jordan Olufson said when asked what he feels he’s done as a coach to motivate the team. “This group wants to accomplish a lot from small goals to big goals. Really happy how motivated this team is.”

With the Gorloks motivated and currently 23-0, the team is clearly in a different place than in previous years. With the NCAA tournament coming closer each day, the Gorloks keep pushing their limits each game and continue their streak.
