However, Fontbonne’s athletic teams simply aren’t on par with Webster’s in a majority of sports. The Gorloks have dominated the rivalry of late, and this trend doesn’t look like it will be changing any time soon. The time has come for Webster to view a different school as being “the” rival.

Aided by junior Gretchen Rieger’s sensational performance in the javelin throw, the Webster University track and field program opened the season on a high note at the Rose-Hulman Early Bird meet on March 19. Rieger won her event and set a school record with a throw of 38.94 meters. It was an outstanding day for the Gorloks, as several athletes either broke school records or had personal bests.

When the Webster University baseball program lost 10 seniors from last year’s 35-11 team, the 2011 campaign could have easily been viewed as a potential rebuilding year.
But even with 14 freshmen and four seniors on this year’s roster, coach Bill Kurich would rather reload than rebuild.
Softball team reloads for 2011
When a regular season conference champion like the 2010 Webster University softball team loses two-thirds of its roster, one might conclude the following season would be a rebuilding year. Don’t tell that to the Gorloks and their coach Chris Eaton.

Two days after their 12-game winning streak was snapped by Blackburn College (5-17), the Gorloks responded by beating Spalding University and regaining possession of first place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
