The Webster University baseball team righted the ship with a 4-1 victory over Grinnell College and a 13-1 win over Millikin University on Saturday, March 3. Webster was playing in its first home games of 2012 at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill. The wins improved the Gorloks to 2-3 overall in the young season.

Webster scored all four of its runs against Grinnell in a productive fourth inning. The team was held hitless by Grinnell starter Ben Pope until the bottom of the fourth.  Junior center fielder Cody Stevenson singled to start the Gorlok attack.

Stevenson then stole second and third base and scored on a Tom Henke fielder’s choice. Webster would not look back as senior catcher Matt Moore singled and scored freshman right fielder Isaac Behme and Henke, a senior, later that inning.

The inning was capped off by an RBI single courtesy of sophomore third baseman Michael Aaron that brought in junior Collin Bates.

Senior David Mueller, in his second start, held Grinnell scoreless with a quality start. Mueller went seven innings and struck out nine, surrendering five hits and four walks. Mueller was rewarded with his first win of the year.

Junior Steven Dooley gave up a run in the top of the eighth in relief of Mueller, but eventually closed out the first victory for the Webster baseball team in 2012. Dooley threw two innings, giving up one run on two hits and two walks, striking out one.

The Gorloks’ game against Millikin was not nearly as tightly contested. Webster scored six runs in the fourth inning to blow open the game. The Gorloks tacked on two runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth.

Junior pitcher Cody Hafeli evened his record at 1-1 with the win. Hafeli allowed only one run on three hits in six innings of work.

The Gorloks will once again take on Grinnell and Millikin on Sunday, March 4. Webster plays Grinnell at 10 a.m. and Millikin at 4 p.m., with both games being played at GCS Ballpark.
